LIBER GENESIS CAPUT XIX, HEBRAICE BERESITH 19

 

¹ veneruntque duo angeli Sodomam vespere sedente Loth in foribus civitatis qui cum vidisset surrexit et ivit obviam eis adoravitque pronus in terra

And the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of the city. And seeing them, he rose up and went to meet them, and worshipped prostrate to the ground,

But before they went to bed, the men of the city surrounded the house, from the youngest to the oldest, all the people together.

⁵ vocaveruntque Loth et dixerunt ei ubi sunt viri qui introierunt ad te nocte educ illos huc ut cognoscamus eos

And they called to Lot and said to him: Where are the men who entered with you tonight? Bring them out to us, so that we may know them.

⁸ habeo duas filias quae necdum cognoverunt virum educam eas ad vos et abutimini eis sicut placuerit vobis dummodo viris istis nihil faciatis mali quia ingressi sunt sub umbraculum tegminis mei

I have two daughters who have not known man. I will bring them out to you, and you may use them as you please, provided you do no harm to these men, because they have come under the shadow of my roof.

But they said: Move aside! And they said again: This one came as a foreigner, and now he sets himself as a judge. Now we will harm you more than them. And they pressed violently upon Lot, and were near to breaking the doors.

But they said: Get thee back thither. And again: Thou camest in, said they, as a stranger, was it to be a judge? Therefore we will afflict thee more than them. And they pressed very violently upon Lot: and they were even at the point of breaking open the doors.

And behold, the men put out their hand, and drew Lot back to them, and shut the door.

And they said to Lot: Do you have anyone here, a son-in-law, sons, daughters, or any of yours? Bring them out of this city.

For we will destroy this place, because their cry has grown loud before the LORD, who sent us to destroy them.

¹⁴ egressus itaque Loth locutus est ad generos suos qui accepturi erant filias eius et dixit surgite egredimini de loco isto quia delebit Dominus civitatem hanc et visus est eis quasi ludens loqui

So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were to take his daughters, and said: Arise, get out of this place, for the LORD will destroy this city. But to them, he seemed as one joking.

¹⁴ Egressus itaque Loth, locutus est ad generos suos, qui accepturi erant filias ejus, et dixit: Surgite, egredimini de loco isto, quia delebit Dominus civitatem hanc. Et visus est eis quasi ludens loqui.

So Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law that were to have his daughters, and said: Arise, get you out of this place, because the Lord will destroy this city. And he seemed to them to speak as it were in jest.

And when it was morning, the angels urged him, saying: Arise, take your wife and the two daughters you have, lest you also perish in the wickedness of the city.

And they brought him forth and set him outside the city, and there they spoke to him: Save your life, do not look back, nor stay in the entire surrounding area; save yourself on the mountain, lest you also be consumed.

Because your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your mercy, which you have shown to me in saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil overtake me, and I die.

There is this city here nearby, where I may flee, and it is a small one, so that I shall be saved there; is it not a small one? And my soul shall live.

And he said to him: Behold, I have accepted your petition in this matter also, so that I will not destroy the city for which you have spoken.
